Mycoplasma Pneumonia (Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae) in swine is a prevalent and costly disease that is a common and widely distributed throughout the year in all herds around the country.
Mycoplasma is defined as a chronic, clinically mild, infectious pneumonia of pigs characterized by its ability to produce a persistent dry cough, stunted growth, sporadic “flare-ups” of respiratory issues, and lung lesions.
The disease exposes the pigs respiratory tract to bacterial and viral infections and co-infections by other pathogens due to its ability to damage the cilia that filter air in the respiratory tract.
The disease occurs in all major swine-raising countries where the effects of the disease are uneven and unpredictable and place limits on the efficiency and flexibility of large production units.
The signs and symptoms of Mycoplasma Pneumonia are:
Dry, non-productive cough.
Decrease in feed intake.
"Thumping" or difficult breathing.
Fever.
Lung lesions at time of slaughter.
Exposing pigs to other pigs or boots, clothing, or equipment that have been around other pigs greatly increases the risk for disease transmission.
Disease can be transmitted from sow to lactating piglets. Primary transmission includes direct contact and aerosol between pigs.
Vaccination programs need to be modified to each swine operation and should be developed in consultation with your veterinarian. The following vaccines have been found to be extremely effective at combating the spread of the disease:
Only vaccine labeled to aid in reducing chronic pneumonia, severity of colonization and shedding of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.
Vaccinate for mycoplasma pneumonia when you process baby pigs.
Helps provide a duration of immunity with a high degree of safety, ease of use and syringe ability.
Approved for the vaccination of healthy swine as an aid in preventing chronic pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.
Can be administered as early as one week of age with a booster shot two weeks later.
Pregnant swine may be safely vaccinated at 6 and 2 weeks prior to farrowing.
For vaccination of healthy swine 3 weeks of age or older as an aid in preventing respiratory disease caused by H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2 and respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae for a period of 25 weeks.
Duration of immunity of at least 10 weeks.
Single-dose, 1 mL vaccination can be given to pigs 3 weeks of age or older to best fit your program.
Provides at least 26 weeks of immunity to last through market.
Technology that provides rapid onset of immunity as well as a low risk of adverse reactions in pigs.
Offering convenient control of mycoplasma and circovirus in a single injection.
Reduced labor costs compared to 2-dose vaccines.
Single dose administration minimizes stress on pigs.
True combination vaccine, not a mix of 2 existing products. The first PCV and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae combination vaccine with one-dose, one-bottle convenience with protocol flexibility.
Manufacturing process helps remove extraneous proteins that can affect efficacy and safety.
Improved average daily gain (ADG) up to 4.5% in vaccinated pigs tracked from processing to market in a dual-challenge comparative study.
