Influenza in Swine

Swine Influenza

Swine influenza is an acute, highly contagious, respiratory disease that results from infection with type A influenza virus.

Pigs are the principal hosts of classic swine influenza virus. (Human infections have been reported, but porcine strains of influenza A do not appear to easily spread in the human population, however, deaths have occurred in immuno-compromised people.)

In 2009, a pandemic strain of H1N1 influenza A virus spread globally; it infected people, swine, and poultry, as well as a small number of dogs, cats, and other animals. The disease in swine occurs commonly in the midwestern USA (and occasionally in other states), Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe (including the UK, Sweden, and Italy), Kenya, China, Japan, Taiwan, and other parts of eastern Asia.

Swine influenza viruses can circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans.

Signs & Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of Swine Influenza are:

  • Fever

  • Depression

  • Coughing

  • Discharge from nose and/or eyes

  • Sneezing

  • Difficulty Breathing

  • Eye redness or inflammation

  • Off feed

How Swine Influenza is Trasmitted

Exposing pigs to other pigs or boots, clothing, or equipment that have been around other pigs greatly increases the risk for disease transmission.

Pig to pig contact and aerosol are the primary modes of transmission.

Prevention of Swine Influenza

Vaccination programs need to be modified to each swine operation and should be developed in consultation with your veterinarian.

The following are the current recommend vaccines to utilize...

Ingelvac Provenza
Ingelvac Provenza

Protects against multiple IAV-S strains.

Decreases nasal shedding, which reduces transmission in a population.

A live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) breaks through maternal antibodies to stimulate immunity.

Provides protection before pigs are most vulnerable (e.g., commingling, weaning) .

Ingelvac Provenza's intranasal administration provides protection at the site of natural IAV-S infection.

Flusure XP
Flusure XP

Only commercial vaccine that covers H3N2 Clusters H3N2 Clusters IV-A and IV- B.

Excellent syringe ability at any temperature, which makes vaccination easier.

Readily available and can combine with other Zoetis products such as Farrowsure Gold, Farrowsure Gold B, Respisure, and Respisure ER Bac Plus.

It's important to contact your veterinarian to determine the best vaccination program for your site to control and prevent the swine influenza virus.
